PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a topical composition which is useful for the treatment or prophylaxis of herpes virus infections and offers the excellent antiviral and therapeutic efficacy as well as the improved shelf life. SOLUTION: The topical composition contains, in a pharmaceutical carrier that contains about 15 to about 25 wt.% of propylene glycol and about 10 to about 25 wt.% of a 12-22C alkanoic acid isopropyl ester, an anti-inflammatory glucocorticoid and a nucleoside-analogue antiviral agent.
