PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a safety device for an automatic opening/closing umbrella which allows to prevent an umbrella hollow rod from being inadvertently opened by spring when the automatic opening/closing umbrella is closed. SOLUTION: The inside of a body provided in an umbrella handle includes a rotary shaft, a ratchet, a spring, a positioning unit, and a pull string. The rotary shaft is pivoted to the bottom of the body, with the rachet fixed on one end of the shaft and with the spring fixed on the other end. Teeth are provided on the ratchet. An outer end of the spring is fixed onto the body. One end of the positioning unit is pivoted onto the body while the free end thereof is made correspond to the teeth of the ratchet, with a projection provided inside the positioning unit. The projection is inserted from one side hole in the body side wall into the shaft hole of the body, corresponding to a position where a catching head internally installed in the umbrella hollow rod contracts and returns. One end of the pull string is fixed onto the rotary shaft, with the other end fixed onto an inside cap at the upper end of the umbrella. When the umbrella is closed using mono-directionality of the ratchet, the umbrella hollow rod merely contracts downward. Once the force contracting and returning downward is dissipated, the pull string pulls the umbrella hollow rod, preventing injury from being caused when the umbrella hollow rod is inadvertently opened by spring.
