PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrolyte for an electric double layer capacitor that has high electric conductivity and a wide potential window, and to provide the electric double layer capacitor that is fabricated using the electrolyte for the electric double layer capacitor, and has a high breakdown voltage and superior long-period stability of electric characteristics. SOLUTION: The electrolyte for the electric double layer capacitor is obtained by using cyclic carbonate represented by general formula (1) or (2) as a solvent and using quaternary ammonium salt as an electrolyte and dissolving the electrolyte in the solvent.
