PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for a continuously variable transmission capable of restraining a sense of incongruity to a driver caused by excessive rise of engine rotation speed. SOLUTION: The T/M_ECU 20 executes steps of: calculating a basic target primary rotation speed NP0 on the basis of speed change characteristics of a selected mode; calculating an amount of slope corrections ΔNP0 according to slope resistance Rd; performing upper limit treatment of the amount of slope corrections ΔNP0 by using an upper limit value ΔNPmax according to vehicle speed V; and correcting the basic target primary rotation speed NP0 at a downshift side by using the amount of slope corrections ΔNP0 performing the upper limit treatment. In this case, the T/M_ECU 20 makes the allowable upper limit value ΔNPmax change to the amount of slope corrections ΔNP for every mode so as to make the upper limit values of the target primary rotation speed NP among modes 1-3 equivalent each other in the case where designated engine brake resulted from a road slope while performing a cruise control function is required.
