PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spark-ignition internal combustion engine suppressing occurrence of knocking and degradation of combustion and also suppressing deterioration of fuel economy, even if a mechanical compression ratio detector fails. SOLUTION: This spark-ignition internal combustion engine includes: a variable compression ratio mechanism A varying a mechanical compression ratio; a variable valve timing mechanism B controlling the valve closing timing of an intake valve; the mechanical compression ratio detector 22 detecting the mechanical compression ratio; and a torque variation detection means 43 detecting a torque variation. The variable compression ratio mechanism is controlled so that the mechanical compression ratio becomes a target mechanical compression ratio set according to the operating condition of the engine, and the variable valve timing mechanism is controlled so that the valve closing timing of the intake valve becomes a target valve closing timing set according to the operating condition of the engine. When the mechanical compression ratio detector fails, the mechanical compression ratio is reduced within such a range that the torque variation larger than a reference torque variation is not detected initially by the torque variation detection means if an engine load is increased.
