In order to display specific areas that require careful handling without causing a feeling of strangeness, a map display device comprises a current-position calculating unit that calculates the current position; a database exclusively for specific areas, the database storing map data that can be used only in the specific areas; an available specific area database that stores data used for displaying the inside of the specific areas outside the specific areas; a database on the outside of the specific areas, the database storing map data that relates to the outside of the specific areas and that can be used both in the specific areas and outside the specific areas; a control unit that generates display data for displaying a map outside the specific areas using map data acquired from the database on the outside of the specific areas and display data for displaying images having permitted map attributes in the specific areas using data acquired from the available specific area database when the current position calculated by the current-position calculating unit is outside the specific areas; and a display unit that displays the map or the images having the permitted map attributes on the basis of the display data generated by the control unit.
