PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a base oil for cooling a device having excellent electric insulation properties and heat conductivity, to provide a device-cooling oil containing the base oil, to provide a device to be cooled by the cooling oil and to provide a device cooling method using the cooling oil. SOLUTION: The base oil for cooling a device contains 30 mass% or more of at least one compound selected from an oleyl ester (an oleic acid ester and an oleyl alcohol ester) and an oleyl ether, wherein the total number of terminal methyl groups, methylene groups and ether groups in the main chains of the oleyl ester and the oleyl ether is 23 or more, the total number of methyl branches and ethyl branches in the molecules of the oleyl ester and the oleyl ether is 1 or less and the kinematic viscosity of the base oil is 4 to 30 mm<SP>2</SP>/s at 40°C. Since the device-cooling oil containing the base oil has excellent electric insulation properties and heat conductivity, the device-cooling oil is suitable for cooling a motor, a battery, an inverter, an engine, an electric cell or the like of an electric-powered car, a hybrid car or the like.
