PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a communication system which can reduce an influence given on the whole communication system by the change of structure of data to be transmitted by a part of devices, and a relay connection unit and a communication method. SOLUTION: In the communication system with an ECU 3 which relays messages to be transmitted from ECUs 1, 2 to an ECU 4, the data structure storage part 302 of the ECU 3 stores the data structure of a message M1 transmitted from the ECU 1 as data structure of a standard message, and the message transfer part 301 of the ECU 3 transfers, when a message M1' of data structure different from that of the stored standard message is transmitted from the ECU 1, the message M1 of the data structure of the standard message and the message M1' to the ECU 4. Thus, the ECU 4 can also receive the message M1 of the same data structure of the standard message as that before change, and receive the message M1 without the need of changing specifications.
