In the manufacture of a whole grained food product from cotton seed, the seed kernels are puffed and treated with a solvent which extracts the toxic pigment (mainly gossypol) but in which the cotton seed oil is substantially insoluable. Preferably the cotton seeds are decorticated and the liberated kernels treated with steam under pressure. The kernels are then puffed by release of pressure and extracted with a non-toxic organic solvent, preferably ethyl alcohol, any solvent remaining in the puffed kernels after extraction evaporating naturally or being removed by vacuum pump. The solvent can be recovered free of pigment by distillation or by chilling. |
