The method involves inserting a slot laterally in a pipe (2) with a scriber knife (3) which is moved relative to the pipe. The pipe completely penetrates a pipe wall (11). The pipe is adjacent with a cutting knife which is moved in a cutting plane relative to the pipe, so that the cutting plane is penetrated in the pipe by the slot, in which the cutting plane is separated. The cutting plane contains the slot. An independent claim is also included for a pipe cutting device.
