PURPOSE: An internal combustion engine having a variable valve device is provided to accurately detect a rotation angle difference between two cam shafts. CONSTITUTION: An internal combustion engine having a variable valve device comprises a cylinder, a first cam shaft, a second cam shaft, a cam phase variable devices(30,31), a first detection unit, and a second detection unit. The cylinder comprises an intake valve or an exhaust valve. The first and second cam shafts are coaxially arranged. The first cam shaft powers a cam for powering a part of a valve. The second cam shaft powers a cam for powering the other part of the valve. The cam phase variable devices are arranged on one end of the first and second cam shafts and change a phase difference between the first and second cam shafts. The first and second detection units detect the rotation angles of the first and second cam shafts.
