PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem wherein the user has changed the HDMI setting or has forcibly set the HDMI in the worst condition for video display. SOLUTION: When a television 10 and an optical disc drive device 30 are connected through an HDMI cable 20, a television-side control circuit 24 and an optical disc drive-side control circuit 36 start communication with a television-side HDMI interface 25 and an optical disc drive-side HDMI interface 37, respectively, via the HDMI cable 20 by using the CEC function. At the optical disc drive device 30 or the television 10, the number of bits and the resolution are initially set at the maximum values. Then, the number of bits is gradually reduced in the order of the supported number of bits until HDCP authentication becomes successful. Furthermore, if the HDCP authentication continues to fail, the resolution is gradually reduced. Thus, a combination of the number of bits and the resolution at which the HDCP authentication succeeds at as high video quality as possible can be found, and a fault due to poor HDMI compatibility that cannot be solved by only reducing the number of bits and the resolution to the lowest values can be avoided.
