The device has oxidizing gas supply units (24-30) for supplying oxidizing gas with small oxygen concentration into a measuring chamber (8). A sensing element (32) detects the concentration in the chamber, and the gas is guided into the chamber after collecting particles in a particulate filter (12). The filter is heated by a heating device (14) such that the particles in the filter are oxidized in the gas. An amount of the oxidized particles and total quantity of the particles in the gas supplied by the gas supply units are determined by changing the detected concentration in the gas. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining particle concentration i.e. soot concentration, of gas i.e. exhaust gas, from an exhaust line of a combustion engine of a motor car.
