The system (10) has two cooling circuits (16, 18) cooling fuel stacks (12, 14). Two high-voltage coolant pumps (20, 22) are arranged in the cooling circuits for pumping coolant. An accumulator (26) stores electrical power, and an electrical power impacting unit (24) is provided for impacting of the coolant pumps with electrical power, which is collected from the accumulator. The electrical power impacting unit comprises a control device (32) for adjusting the capacity of the coolant pumps. The cooling circuits comprise a pressure sensor (34) for monitoring pressure of the coolant. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a fuel cell system.
