PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine a material and specifications of a workpiece even when a distance between a light source and the workpiece is changed. SOLUTION: A workpiece detecting device 1 for determining the type of a workpiece 3 positioned at the top every time a workpiece 3 is taken out from a plurality of stacked workpieces 3 of which surfaces have different light reflection characteristics includes: a pallet 6 for placing workpieces 3; cameras 8-1, 8-2 arranged to be spaced away from the pallet 6 by predetermined distances for imaging surfaces of workpieces 3 with a predetermined light volume; a memory 13 for storing reference images of a plurality of workpieces 3 corresponding to types and the stacked heights of the workpieces 3; and an image processing device 9 for collating captured images by the cameras 8-1, 8-2 with the reference images.
