A two dimensional image is sent from a server (110, fig. 1) to a user device such as an STB (200, fig. 1). The server uses object detection and segmentation on the image to detect and extract height, width and position data of objects to which a 3D effect will be applied, and sends this data to the STB. Depth information in the form of a depth map is also generated, possibly by use of a separate detector (810, fig. 10), and sent to the STB. The STB generates displaced modified object images (801R and 803R, fig. 11) based on the distance of the object and display screen size to create a 3D effect that can be viewed using polarizing glasses. Background image data, such as an empty football pitch, may also be used by the STB. The 2D image sent to the device may comprise stitched images from a plurality of high definition cameras (130, fig. 1) having overlapping fields of view. |
