Class 79(5) [Also in Group XXVII] A vehicle engine brake, which is switched on or off by operation of the accelerator and clutch pedals 14, 19, includes a valve 8 in the engine exhaust pipe, a valveactuating electric motor 3 in circuit with three switches, two 17, 20 of which are operated by the accelerator and clutch pedals, respectively, and the third switch 13 being operated when the electric motor circuit is closed by either switch 17, 20, operation of the switch 13 opening the circuit to stop the motor. As shown the valve 8 is operated through an arm 6 and rod 5 from the motor 3 through a screw and nut mechanism 4, provision being made in the mechanism for the motor to overrun the rod 5, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown). The motor 3 is connected through a key-operated switch 30 and a fuse 29 to an earthed battery 1 and through leads 23, 25 to stationary contacts 13b, 13d of the switch 13 having movable contact 13a and further stationary contacts 13c, 13e. The contact 13a is carried by a rod 10 having stops 11, 12 between which is arranged an arm 9 on the rod 5, whereby the contact 13a is moved on the valve 8 reaching its open and closed positions. The contact 13e is connected to a stationary contact 20a of the switch 20 adapted to be connected to another contact 20b bya a movable contact 20e which is thus positioned when the clutch pedal 19 is notbeing operated. The contact 20b is connected to a contact 16b of the switch 17 carried by the accelerator pedal 14 and connected with an earthed contact carried on a spring-urged foot plate 16 on the pedal 14. The contact 13c is connected to contacts 20c, 16a, the contact 20c being connected to an earthed contact 20d by the action of a spring 21 on the contact 20e when the clutch pedal 19 is depressed, and the contact 16a being connected to the earthed contact on the foot plate 16 when the latter is depressed. With the pedal 19 and plate 16 in their foot-released position the valve 8 is operative to brake the vehicle, the brake being released when the plate 16 is depressed preparatory to operating the pedal 14 and the brake being applied on disengagement of the clutch by depression of the pedal 19. The plate 16 may be replaced by a thrust bolt cm the pedal 14. In order to prevent the engine from stalling when the brake is applied there may be provided in the motor circuit parallel to the clutchpedal-controlled switch a switch controlled by an operating device in dependence on the engine speed, the device comprising either a centrifugal governor driven from the fan belt or an element responsive to pressure difference between the induction manifold and th output of the water-circulating or oil pump. In another embodiment Fig. 4 (not shown), a relay is. provided operated by the switches associated with the accelerator and clutch pedals. A hand adjustable device may be provided to prevent the flap sealing the exhaust pipe.</p>
