PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for industrially producing optically active trifluorolactic acid used as an important intermediate for a medicinal or agricultural chemical and an optical material. SOLUTION: In this method, recrystallization of a diastereomeric salt is conducted by suitably using a water-containing recrystallization solvent or an anhydrous recrystallization solvent, when the diastereomeric salt, which comprises racemic trifluorolactic acid and optically active phenethylamine as an optical resolution agent, is optically resolved through the recrystallization. It is found that a hydrate of the optically active diastereomeric salt is more efficiently deposited, when compared with a well-known non-hydrate thereof, and an absolute configuration of the trifluorolactic acid obtained from the hydrate through the optical resolution is reverse to an absolute configuration obtained from the non-hydrate. Therefore, both of enantiomers of the trifluorolactic acid are optically resolved with a considerably higher resolution efficiency than those of conventional procedures, by using only one of enantiomers of the optical active phenethylamine, when deposition of the hydrate and the non-hydrate is controlled.
