811,996. Forging dies; jointing by forging. A.M.P. Inc. July 6, 1955 [July 6, 1954], No. 19543/55. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXXVI] In a method of crimping a ferrule 22, Fig. 1, on to the end 24 of a conductor 26, the ferrule is indented at three approximately equallyspaced points 30, the pressure being gradually increased to force the metal of the ferrule and conductor radially outwardly at vertices 35, 36, Fig. 3, between the areas of applied force and to forge the whole into a substantially solid cross-section. The crimping is performed between dies 60, 62, Fig. 8, the assembled ferrule resting in a nest 63 of the lower die 60 which has an arcuate hump 68 in the base for making one of the indents. The other two indents are formed by arcuate camming faces 72 on projections 70 of the other die 62 which progressively enter the nest 63 and force the metal into the arcuate valleys 69 in the base and into the arcuate throat 73 between the projections 70. The sides 64 of the die 60 are made slightly converging to give support to the projections 70. The method may be used with a ferrule 22a, Fig. 6, having an insulation sheath 50, the crimping forces being applied through the sheath 50 without detriment and causing the insulation to thicken along the vertices 35, 36, Fig. 5, where the greatest amount of abrasion is likely to occur. Specification 620,561 is referred to. |
