812,242. Fluid bearings. TECHNION RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION Ltd., REINER, M., and POPPER, J. B. June 18, 1957 [June 29, 1956], No. 19209/57. Class 12 (1). [Also in Group XXVI] An air bearing for a shaft 31 comprises a conical rotor 29 separated from a corresponding conical recess in a stator 30 by a narrow gap, less than 0.5 mm. in width. Provided the circumferential velocity of the rotor divided by the width of the gap is not less than 106/second, the apparatus acts as a centripetal compressor whereby air is forced inwards through the gap towards a depression 32, forming a cushion of air in the gap. A similar rotor may be provided at the other end of the shaft. The conical surfaces may instead be frusto-conical, the closed depression 32 being replaced by an outlet whereby there is a continuous flow of air through the gap to cool the bearing. An auxiliary bearing may be provided to support the shaft at rest and at low speeds of rotation, and may be disengaged automatically when the shaft reaches full speed and the air cushion is established. |
