[Also in Group XXXVIII] In a device for indicating or controlling the position of a movable part in a machine-tool, the part is coupled, as by cables, to a drum connected by gears to rotary switches which control circuits to illuminate indicator-panels and show the displacement of the part. Thus a movable part 1, Fig. 1, is connected by cables 4<SP>1</SP> to a drum 4, the cables wrapping the drum in opposite directions and the drum being axially-movable by a screw 11 to keep the cables aligned with part 1. The shaft 8, 11 of the drum is rotated by a motor 38 through gear-trains in a casing 15, the gear-trains operating rotary switches 21-25 at different speeds and the switches being connected to the respective columns of a panel 16, each column representing movements of part 1 of a different order of magnitude. As applied to a drilling- machine, vertical and horizontal drill-heads 54, 47, Fig. 3, are adjusted and fed relatively to elongated work, such as an angle-bar resting on a bed 71 and moved longitudinally by a roller-bed 66. Racks 60, 61 on the heads operate rotary-switches 64, 65 to indicate the positions of the drills on panels 77, Fig. 4, and the shaft 8 which drives the roller-bed is connected to the gearing 15 for indicating the position of the work on the panel. The motors which rotate and feed the drills, adjust the positions of the drill-heads and drive the rollertable are controlled by push-buttons 76 adjacent the panel 77, or alternatively the circuits for the indicating-panels may be controlled automatically by punched-cards or tape, or magnetic-tape. The work is gripped against an angle-bar 69 by an hydraulically-operated plunger 72, whose movement is indicated at 82 on the panel. The device may be applied to lathes, radial-arm drilling-machines, or rotary members such as the tables of milling-machines.
