In facsimile apparatus in which a message sheet is gripped or released by the movement of some or all of a number of gripping members. formed as L-shaped jaws, towards or away from the axis of a cylindrical drum which is rotated to effect the scanning of the sheet of which that portion opposite the scanning means is held in position, the edge of the message sheet is held by the jaws in contact with the surface of the rotatable member by spring means, against the action of which the jaws are moved to enable a message sheet to be loaded on to the drum. As shown in Fig. 1, the gripping members 3 formed with teeth 8 engaging the surface of the drum 2 are mounted in radial slots 1 and have apertured members 7 mounted on a rod 6 passing axially through the drum member 2 and connected to springs 4 so that the members 3 are held against a rod 5. The members 3 are raised to effect loading or unloading of the sheet by a pivoted member 9 which in the stop position of the rotatable drum is actuated, and through its extension 11, moves the rod 6 outwardly relative to the axis of the drum. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the members 7, 3 are biased clockwise against an appropriate stop, and in a further modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), one of the slot-forming surfaces of the drum is bent inwardly so that the outer surfaces of the gripping members do not extend beyond the circumference of the drum. In a modified arrangement for operating the gripping members, Fig. 6, the end of a bent lever 25, 27 pivoted at 26 engages, in the rest position of the drum 2, the end of an arm 21 of a bent lever pivoted at 22 so that the horizontal arm 23 engages the rod 6 which lifts the L-shaped gripping members 3 for the loading and unloading operation. In a modified loading arrangement, Fig. 5 (not shown), the end of a pivoted lever engages the lower extremity of a rod vertically slidable in a slot in the drum and connected at its upper end to the rod 6 by which the gripping members are axially moved.
