PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that can prolong life thereof and also prevent image failure by preventing breakdown of image carrier in long use. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus 100, a power source 25 applies a charging bias to each of chargers 2a to 2d so that the surface potential of each of photoreceptor drums 1a to 1d is equal to a third surface potential V3 larger in absolute value than a first surface potential V1 in the beginning of start of printing, is equal to the first surface potential V1 until the total number N of prints reaches the predetermined number Ns of prints after the beginning of the start of printing, and is equal to a second surface potential V2 smaller in absolute value than the first surface potential V1 after the total number N reaches the predetermined number Ns of prints.
