A wheelchair base including a base frame (11) and a pair of pivot arm assemblies (24, 26), the pivot arm assemblies (24, 26) each including a first pivot arm (56) and a second pivot arm (58), the first and second pivot arms (56, 58) being pivotally coupled to each other for pivotal movement about a transverse pivot axis (61), the first and second pivot arms (56, 58) defining respectively first and second auxiliary wheel attachments (68, 80) substantially opposed to the transverse pivot axis (61) for attaching respectively first and second end auxiliary wheels (29, 33) thereto, each pivot arm assembly (24, 26) further including a link (84) pivotally coupled to the second pivot arm (58) at a location intermediate the transverse pivot axis (61) and the second auxiliary wheel attachment (80) for pivotal movement about a link axis (85) substantially parallel to the transverse pivot axis (61 ), each pivot arm assembly (24, 26) further defining a drive wheel attachment (90) at a location intermediate the first and second auxiliary wheel attachments (68, 80) for attaching a drive wheel (20) thereto; the pivot arm assemblies (24, 26) are mounted to the base frame (11) substantially laterally opposed to each other through the link (84) and first pivot arm (58) such that the pivot arm assemblies (24, 26) are pivotable relative to the base frame (12) independently of each other. |
