<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal optical element with high impact resistance. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal optical element is configured to present a light transmitting state and a light diffusing state by sandwiching an electrooptical function layer including liquid crystal and a polymer between a pair of substrates with electrodes, at least one of the substrates being transparent, and changing the alignment state of the liquid crystal according to application of a voltage. The polymer forms a column resin aggregate composed of a plurality of column resins. (i) Each of the column resins has an axis substantially matching the normal direction of the surface of the substrates with electrodes, and (ii) each of the column resins is formed so that the occupation area of the column resin in the electrooptical function layer in an azimuth plane horizontal to the surface of the substrates with electrodes is substantially reduced in a direction as it is away from the surface of the substrates with electrodes. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT</p> |
