PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device of a diesel engine, properly determining whether or not the maximum cylinder pressure exceeds a limit value and preventing an abnormal rise of the cylinder pressure by reducing the cylinder pressure with high reliability. SOLUTION: The control device of the diesel engine includes a pressure sensor detecting pressure in an air supply manifold and a temperature sensor detecting temperature in the air supply manifold, calculates a gas density in the air supply manifold from detected values of the pressure sensor and the temperature sensor, compares the gas density with the maximum value of the gas density in the air supply manifold with the maximum cylinder pressure calculated beforehand not exceeding a predetermined value from a relationship between the gas density in the air supply manifold and the maximum cylinder pressure of the engine. When the gas density in the air supply manifold is equal to or higher than the maximum value of the gas density, a fuel injection amount is reduced so that the gas density in the air supply manifold becomes less than the maximum value of the gas density, bringing the maximum cylinder pressure of the engine less than the predetermined value.
