PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To mainly provide a negative electrode active material that sufficiently increases discharge capacity of a secondary battery and achieves the secondary battery with superior safety without taking any measures against burning, and to provide a method for manufacturing the same. SOLUTION: The negative electrode active material composed of a high-capacity layered silicate mineral is provided in which mineral a position of the highest peak in an X-ray diffraction spectrum thereof is shifted to a lower angle side with respect to a postion of the highest peak of an X-ray diffraction spectrum of an unprocessed layered silicate mineral.
