<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a composite metal hydroxide, capable of suppressing generation of a side product; and to provide a lithium composite metal oxide obtained by using the composite metal hydroxide as a raw material and capable of upgrading battery performance, especially high-output characteristics. <P>SOLUTION: The composite metal hydroxide is produced by contacting an aqueous solution including Ni, Mn and Fe with an alkali to obtain a coprecipitate slurry, then by subjecting the coprecipitate slurry to solid-liquid separation to make a wet cake, and by determining the keeping time until the drying of the wet cake to be 48 hr or less. The content of manganese oxide (Mn<SB>3</SB>O<SB>4</SB>) being a by-product and included in the composite metal hydroxide is lower than the conventional content. A non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery is obtained by using, as a cathode active material, the lithium composite metal oxide obtained by mixing and burning the composite metal hydroxide with a lithium compound.
