A method and system for path switching and a method for transmitting downlink data are provided by the present invention. The method for path switching includes: a current working optical line terminal (OLT) transmits downlink data carrying the identity information of the OLT itself to an optical network unit (ONU); the ONU receives and parses the downlink data in order to obtain the identity information of the current working OLT; and when a change in the identity information of the current working OLT is detected by the ONU, the ONU performs path switching. The ONU skips some existing login and activation steps in order to reduce the time of switchover from primary path to a backup path performed by the OLT and the ONU, and improve the communication efficiency between the OLT and the ONU.
