PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper sheet processing apparatus that eliminates paper jam at higher probability when paper sheets are conveyed. SOLUTION: The paper sheet processing apparatus 1 includes: a stacking unit 10 having a conveying mechanism 14 conveying a bundle of paper sheets in forward and reverse directions, a conveyance path leading to a conveyance destination to which the paper sheets are conveyed, and a vertically movable stage 12 provided on the conveyance path; a failure detection unit 20 for detecting a conveyance failure when the bundle of paper sheets is conveyed from the stacking unit 10; and a control unit 30 for controlling the conveying mechanism 14 and the stage 12 based on the detection result of the failure detection unit 20. When the failure detection unit 20 detects a failure, the control unit 30 controls the conveying mechanism 14 to convey the bundle of paper sheets in a reverse direction, and controls the stage 12 to lower the stage 12 to a desired lowered position to release the bundle of paper sheets onto the stage 12 of the stacking unit 10.
