PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle surrounding recognition apparatus that reduces false detection of artifacts such as utility poles, guardrails and road paints with less processing load in detecting pedestrians by pattern matching. SOLUTION: The vehicle surrounding recognition apparatus includes an image acquisition part (1011) for acquiring an image of a view ahead of a vehicle, a processing area setting part (1021) for setting a pedestrian detection area in the image, a pedestrian candidate setting part (1031) for setting a pedestrian candidate area for determining whether there is a pedestrian in the image, and a pedestrian determination part (1041) for determining whether the pedestrian candidate area corresponds to a pedestrian or an artifact according to a rate of change in grayscale in a predetermined direction in the pedestrian candidate area.
