PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper separating and conveying mechanism with a simple structure at low cost while ensuring a separating performance equal to or higher than the conventional technique. SOLUTION: The paper feeder 1 includes a paper feeding tray 2 for stacking a plurality of paper and a paper feeding mechanism 3 for separating at least the uppermost paper P1 of a paper bundle P one by one by sliding along the upper surface of the second paper P2 from the uppermost paper to feed the paper in one direction. The paper feeding mechanism 3 includes: vibration members 17 and 18 for separating a paper while vibrating the paper in the paper feeding direction by abutting on the rear edge of the paper feeding direction of the paper bundle P; a feed roller 21 arranged at the downstream side of the paper feeding direction of the paper feeding tray 2 for feeding the paper in contact with the surface of the uppermost paper P1; a paper pressing mechanism 23 having a retractable member 22 composed so as to be projected or retracted toward the contact surface between the feed roller 21 and the paper and a drive source of the retractable member; and a controller for controlling the entire device.
