The gastroscope (1) has a sensor (4) arranged at a distal end (3) of a flexible insertion tube (2) and adjacent to a working channel. The sensor includes an electrode (5) made of acid-fast noble metal e.g. platinum and gold, and another electrode (6) made of silver. An electrical voltage e.g. alternating voltage with a variable preset frequency spectrum, is applied between the electrodes. A change in an electric variable e.g. electric current, is measured between the electrodes when ammonia is present. The frequency spectrum includes portions with different bandwidths.
