PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ratchet type tensioner that prevents a backlash of a plunger from a timing chain at the time of engine start after long-term leaving to reduce a fluttering noise and prevents a burn of the plunger without controlling movement in a reverse direction of the plunger generated by an excess chain tension after engine start. SOLUTION: In the ratchet type tensioner 100, an energizing force Fs of a ratchet energizing spring 160 for energizing a piston 150 with a ratchet that slides in a direction orthogonal to the advance/retreat direction of the plunger 120 toward a rack tooth 122 on the plunger side surface is set larger than a component of a force f1 generated in a sliding direction of the piston 150 with the ratchet by a reverse force F1 at the time of engine start and also set smaller than a component of a force f2 generated in the sliding direction of the piston 150 with the ratchet by a reverse force F2 in excess chain tension after engine start.
