PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a counterweight of an elevator not inclined relative to a weight-side guide rail due to the weight of a weight compensation rope. SOLUTION: When a tilt detecting means detects the tilt of the counterweight 100, a controlling means controls operation of a driving means so that a movable weight body 12b is projected by an amount in accordance with the tilt toward a side opposite to a locking portion. Then, a moment defined by the weight of a portion of the weight compensation rope C which is drooped from the counterweight 100 and the length of the locking portion 2a is offset by a moment defined by the weight of the movable weight body 12b and the projecting amount of the movable weight body 12b.
