The device (1) has illumination units (2a, 2b) e.g. wide-band LED, for output of polychromatic light (4) in an infrared range for formation of a light curtain (3), which extends along an optical axis (X). An image sensor (20) is provided with a two-dimensional sensor surface (20a) for recording wavelength-dispersive fanned-out light (19) emitted by a grid (17) as a two-dimensional diffraction pattern and an output of image signals. A control unit, an evaluation unit and a memory receive the signals output by the sensor, and evaluates and identifies materials contained in an object (6).
