A process for manufacturing anisotropic ZnO nanoparticles comprising the steps of: -providing an emulsion of an aqueous solution, an aprotic non-polar organic solvent which is essentially non-soluble with water, and an emulsifier containing functional groups capable of specific interaction with ZnO surfaces selected from the group consisting of a polyglycerylate; -adding, by maintaining the emulsion, an organo metallic precursor selected from the group consisting of the formula RZnOR' where R is Me or Et and R' is Me, Et, Pr, Bu, iso-Pr, tert-Bu,or OCH2 CH2OCH3 able to form ZnO; -reacting the mixture for a sufficient time to form ZnO, -removal of the water and the aprotic non-polar organic solvent upon forming of said ZnO, and -isolating the reaction product in which nanoparticles of ZnO with prismatic shape having a triangular basis are obtained in a colloidal dispersion. The obtainable nanoparticles of ZnO are used as UV-protective material for cosmetic and industrial applications. An improved UV-protection in the UV-A range compared to zinc oxide of other crystal forms is achieved. |
