The method involves determining whether gas-combustion air mixture and a combustion chamber (11) of a gas burner (10) comprise contamination, from ionization current that is provided by an ionization sensor (13). Composition and/or amount of gas-combustion air mixture are adjusted based on the current when the contamination is less than a threshold value. The composition and/or amount of air mixture are not adjusted based on the current when the contamination is greater than another threshold value, which is larger than the former threshold value.
