Disclosed is a method of assembling an internal combustion engine 110. The method comprises the steps of comprising the steps of connecting a cylinder head 130 to an engine block equipped with a plurality of cylinders 121-124. The cylinder head 130 and the engine block are clamped together by means of a plurality of bolts arranged so that each cylinder 121Â-124 is surrounded by a respective group 800, 810 of bolts such that the plurality of bolts comprises lateral (outer) bolts belonging to a single group and central (inner) bolts belonging to two groups. The cylinder head 130 is clamped to the engine block so that the clamping forces are evenly distributed across all of the cylinders in such a way that the total clamping load of each group 800, 810 of bolts surrounding each cylinder 121-124 and applied to each cylinder 121-124 is substantially the same. This is achieved either by using outer bolts which provide less clamping force in themselves, for example by means of a reduced diameter of shaft, or by tightening the outer bolts less than the inner bolts.
