Apparatus for the production of envelopes comprises mechanism for cutting out the fold comers from the envelope blanks and, if desired, for shaping one or more of the closure flaps, the mechanism including stationary die members disposed in the path of the blanks means for feeding each blank over the die members, and rotatable cutting blades arranged to co-operate with the die members and arranged respectively to be rotated about an axis which is parallel with the plane in which the blanks travel but which is fixed relatively to the movement of the envelope blanks so that the blades each rotate in a path perpendicular to the said plane and operate on the blank. As shown in Fig. 1, blanks 10 cut from a web 11 at a cutting station 16 are advanced continuously by means of feed rollers into a cutting station 19 where fold corners or notches 32 are removed from the sides of the blank by means of two pairs of cutting blades 20, 201 and 21, 211, the blades of each pair being formed on the forked ends of a rotatable member 22 (or 23). The dies co-operating with the two pairs of cutting blades comprise two blocks 24, 25, Fig. 6, each having recesses 26, 27 or 26<SP>1</SP>, 27<SP>1</SP> aligned with the cutting blades; alternatively, the die blocks may each be in two parts each co-operable with one of the cutting blades. On leaving the cutting station 19, the blanks may be fed to a slitting station in which the angular tips of the opposite side flaps 3, 4 are removed. In another arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), the cutting blades are modified so that they also shape the closure flaps. In a further arrangement. Fig. 3, the shaping of the blank is effected at two cutting stations 40, 41. In the first station 40, the cutting blades acting on the sides of the top flap 1 are shaped to cut away opposite sides of this flap to form convexlycurved side edges and simultaneously to cut away part only of the fold corners. On leaving station 40, the partly-shaped blanks are deflected into a direction perpendicular to their previous path of travel and are fed into a second cutting station 41 comprising cutting blades and dies shaped to remove the angular tips of the side flaps 3, 4 and simultaneously complete the cutting out of the fold corners. The arrangement shown in Fig. 3 may be modified by arranging the cutters in station 40 to complete the cutting out of the fold corners. In cases where flaps are to be shaped after the fold corners have been cut, means may be provided for arresting the blank in any such blank-shaping station. Each flap may be shaped in more than two stages. Instead of cutting the blanks from a continuous web, pre-cut blanks from a pile may be fed into the fold corner cutting and, when provided, the flap-shaping station or stations.
