A transflective liquid crystal display comprises a plurality of pixels (100). Each pixel (100) includes a liquid crystal layer (140) between a first structure (110) defining a transmissive area (132) adjacent to a reflective area (131), and a second structure (120). A plurality of electrodes are formed on one of the first and the second structure such that at least two electrodes (116) are positioned in the transmissive area (132) at a first distance d1, and at least two electrodes (117) are positioned in the reflective area (131) at a second distance d2, where d2 > d1 and, preferably, d2 = ˆš2 d1.
