A process for regenerating cuprous chloride catalysts inactivated by use in the synthesis of acrylonitrile from acetylene and hydrocyanic acid, comprises dehydrating an aqueous solution containing the inactivated catalyst at elevated temperature and removing resins which separate out on the melt formed. The resins form an oil on the melt which may be decanted from the melt, or the resins may be burnt away with an oxidizing flame. Alternatively the catalyst solution may be flowed through a rotary furnace in which a highly oxidizing flame is burning, so that the catalyst is dehydrated and a film of melt formed on the walls of the furnace, the resins separating out on the film and then being burnt away. After regeneration the cuprous chloride, which may contain alkali metal salts, is dissolved in water, acidified, and re-used. Examples are given. |
