The table (1) has a layer of rectangular tiles (19,23). The tiles lie on the edge side on parallely running carriers in a loose and self supporting manner. The carriers are spaced from each other. The carrier has an L-shaped or a T-shaped cross-section. A functional module (26,27,28) is provided for picking up the grid of the tiles.
