PURPOSE: A lighting device and a projection-type image displaying device are provided to make interference fringe appear less at a relatively low cost and in a relatively simple construction. CONSTITUTION: A light emitting element includes a light source and emits a light beam along a first axis. The light beam has highest level of anisotropy interference on a second axis perpendicular to the first axis. An optical multiplexer is located optically downstream the light emitting element. The optical multiplexer has a multiplexing axis perpendicular to the first axis. The second axis and the multiplexing axis are oriented each other at an angle other than 0°, 90°, 180° and 270°.
