The process of sorting bivalve shells to separate dead bivalve shells and abnormal living bivalve shells, comprises simultaneously passing the shells in a liquid bath and agitating the shells. The liquid has a density of 1.4-2.5, which is greater than the density of the living shells. The step of agitation comprises injecting a liquid in the bath. The liquid comprises saline solution including aqueous solution of calcium bromide having a coefficient of viscosity of 1-1.7 poise or sodium bromide having a coefficient of viscosity of 1-1.4 poise.
