A street lighting device (10) with a first light source (12) for illuminating the street plane (S) from above, the device (10) comprises a further light source (16) located at a position closer to the street plane (S) than the first light source (12). Sensor means (18) are present, these means being sensitive to the occurrence of conditions of reduced visibility, caused for example by the presence of fog or smoke. A control unit (20) connected to the sensor means (18) is capable of activating the second light source (16) in the presence of said conditions of reduced ambient visibility.
