A fuel cell system comprises a fuel cell device (24), an exhaust gas channel which evacuates gas evacuated from the fuel cell device (24), and a water tank (6) which stores water contained in the exhaust gas. The water tank (6) has a first water storage section (17), a second water storage section (18), and a communication section (29) which is configured to connect the first water storage section (17) and the second water storage section (18) at a position in the lower part of the water tank (6). A water drain opening (20) is provided in the second water storage section (18) of the water tank (6) at a position above the communication section (29). The exhaust gas channel is connected to the first water storage section (17) of the water tank (6). When the flow of the exhaust gas is not obstructed at the portion of the exhaust path which is located on the downstream side of the water tank (6), the exhaust gas is evacuated to the atmosphere from the exhaust gas channel, and when the flow of the exhaust gas is obstructed at the portion of the exhaust path which is located on the downstream side of the water tank (6), the exhaust gas is evacuated to the atmosphere through the water drain opening (20) of the water tank (6).
