A coherent, thin membrane (28) is attached on the filter walls and covers the pores. The membrane includes catalytically active and/or gas storing components. Penetration of soot particles (30) into the filter walls is prevented by the membrane. The filter has a thickness ranging from 10 micrometers to 20 micrometers, a porosity of 50 percentage and a pore size ranging from 1 micrometer to 5 micrometers.
