The present invention relates to a membrane electrode assembly for connection in a fuel cell. It comprises a tubular proton exchange membrane; inner and outer catalytic electrode layers located on the inner and outer surfaces respectively of the tubular membrane; a first electrically-conductive collar located on, and in electrical communication with, the inner electrode layer at a first end of the tubular membrane; and a second electrically-conductive collar located on, and in electrical communication with, the outer electrode layer at a second end of the tubular membrane opposite the first end. At least one of the first and second collars has an opening therethrough to permit the passage of gas through the interior of the tubular membrane.
