PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for automatically controlling the tension of a seat belt depending on the position of a shift lever are provided to control the tension of a seat belt by confirming the state of a driver depending on the position of a shift lever. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for automatically controlling the tension of a seat belt depending on the position of a shift lever comprises a belt wearing detection unit(40), a shift lever position detection unit(20), a tension control unit(30), and a control unit(10). The belt wearing detection unit detects whether a driver wears a seat belt or not. The shift lever position detection unit provides shift lever position information by detecting the position of a shift lever. The tension control unit controls the tension of the seat belt. The control unit controls the tension control unit depending on the detected position of the shift lever.
